Free Prefix Word and Meaning Matching Cards

Help children understand how prefixes change the meaning of a base word with this free Montessori-inspired word study activity.

Instead of memorising long vocabulary lists, children match prefixed words with their meanings and begin noticing meaningful word parts. This supports morphology—the study of how words are constructed from units such as prefixes, roots and suffixes.

The resource introduces the prefixes dis-, un-, re-, sub-, pre-, mis- and semi-. Each prefix is presented with a simple meaning and a collection of related words for children to match with their definitions. For example, children explore dis- as meaning “not,” using words such as disappear, disagree, distrust and dislike.

  • That a prefix is added to the beginning of a word
  • How a prefix can change the meaning of a base word
  • The meanings of seven common prefixes
  • How to break longer words into meaningful parts
  • How word structure can support vocabulary and comprehension
  • How knowledge of prefixes can assist reading and spelling

Prefixes Included

  • un- – not or to reverse an action
  • re- – again or back
  • sub- – under or below
  • pre- – before
  • mis- – wrongly or incorrectly
  • semi- – half or partly

The cards include familiar examples such as unhappy, repaint, submarine, preheat, misspell and semicircle. The re- set, for example, includes words such as repay, recook, repaint, revisit, relabel, recycle and refill.

Why Prefix Study Matters in Structured Literacy

As children move beyond simple phonics patterns, they encounter longer words that cannot be efficiently learned one at a time.

Explicit morphology teaching helps children recognise meaningful chunks within words. When a child understands the meaning of a prefix, they can use it alongside the base word to work out the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

For example:

  • mis + read means to read something incorrectly
  • re + paint means to paint again
  • pre + heat means to heat beforehand
  • sub + floor refers to something beneath the main floor

This connection between spelling, meaning and word structure supports decoding, vocabulary development, comprehension and written language.

How to Use the Cards

Print the pages and cut each prefixed word apart from its matching meaning. Laminate the cards if you would like a durable resource for repeated use.

Begin with one prefix at a time. Read the prefix heading and discuss its meaning. Invite the child to read each word, identify the base word and match it to the correct definition.

You could also:

  • Ask the child to underline or highlight the prefix
  • Build each word with a moveable alphabet
  • Separate the prefix from the base word using two colours
  • Invite the child to use each word in a sentence
  • Sort mixed cards according to their prefix
  • Ask the child to find additional words using the same prefix
  • Use selected words for dictation or spelling review

Continue with Structured Literacy and Morphology

When children are ready to extend their understanding of word structure, these paid resources provide useful next steps:

  • Montessori Science of Reading Suffix Sorting Activities – extend morphology work to common suffixes including s, es, y, ish, en, less, er, ly, ment, ness, ful, ing and ed. Children sort word cards, study suffix meanings and use answer cards for self-correction.
  • Suffixes Word Sort – match root words to suffixes and choose suffixes that complete meaningful sentences while developing spelling, vocabulary and grammar.
  • Open and Closed Syllable Activities – help children break longer words into manageable syllables and use syllable structure to decode unfamiliar words more accurately.
  • Syllable Sorting with Schwa Words – develop awareness of syllable number, vowel sounds and the unstressed schwa found in many multisyllabic words.
  • Modern Montessori Reading Bundle – a larger structured literacy collection covering phonological awareness, phonics, spelling patterns, syllable types, morphology, fluency, sentence reading and comprehension.
