You have told the Montessori Second Great Story—but what should children do once the story ends?

The Coming of Life often sparks questions about early organisms, fossils, dinosaurs, changing environments and the extraordinary development of life on Earth. Yet an instruction such as “research something that interests you” can be too broad, while giving every child the same worksheet can quickly flatten that curiosity.

This Montessori Second Great Story Choice Board offers children a clear selection of meaningful follow-up activities. It provides enough structure to help learners begin while preserving the independence, creativity and choice at the heart of Cosmic Education.

Structure Without Removing Choice

Choice can be motivating—but unlimited choice can also be overwhelming.

Some children immediately know what they want to investigate after the Second Great Story. Others need a concrete starting point, a manageable range of options and a clear idea of what finished work might look like.

This choice board helps children:

  • select from a prepared range of relevant activities;
  • revisit important ideas from the Coming of Life;
  • respond through different strengths and interests;
  • move from listening to purposeful independent work;
  • develop research and reflection skills; and
  • take greater ownership of their Cosmic Education learning.

Particularly Helpful for Neurodivergent Learners

A bounded selection can reduce the executive-function demands of deciding what to do, how to begin and which topic is appropriate. Children can choose an activity that suits their interests and preferred way of communicating while still working within a clear framework connected to the Great Story.

Meaningful Follow-Up Without Another Identical Worksheet

The activity options invite children to engage with the story in different ways. Depending on the task selected, learners may:

  • recall and reflect on important ideas;
  • ask and investigate scientific questions;
  • represent their understanding creatively;
  • research an organism, event or stage in life’s development;
  • make connections between life and changing Earth conditions;
  • communicate their learning through writing or visual work; and
  • extend an area that captured their curiosity during the story.

This variety makes the resource suitable for mixed-age classrooms where children may be exploring the same Great Story at very different levels.

Flexible Ways to Use the Choice Board

  • Ask children to select one activity after the presentation.
  • Invite learners to complete several different types of activities.
  • Add selected tasks to individual work plans.
  • Use the board during a Timeline of Life study.
  • Offer it as independent Cosmic Education shelf work.
  • Use activities for homework or homeschool follow-up.
  • Allow partners or small groups to collaborate on appropriate tasks.
  • Revisit the board later in the three-year elementary cycle.

You do not need every child to complete every option. The resource works best as a menu of possibilities rather than a compulsory worksheet sequence.

Please Note

This resource is a printable follow-up choice board. It does not include the full Second Great Story script, presentation slides, vocabulary-card set or a complete Timeline of Life curriculum.

Children will need access to suitable books, classroom materials or approved research sources for activities requiring further investigation.
