Your child can work out a doubles fact with bead bars—but can they recognise it quickly, recall it confidently and use it without counting every bead?

Doubles facts are an important foundation for addition fluency. They also support near doubles, mental calculation and later multiplication. However, repeated worksheets can push children towards memorisation before the quantities make sense.

This Montessori Doubles Addition Activity Pack combines coloured bead-bar visuals, hands-on modelling, self-checking cards, foldable booklets and game-based practice. Children can move from physically constructing each double towards recognising and recalling the related addition fact.

Build Fluency Without Losing Understanding

Children need more than one way to practise. Some benefit from constructing quantities with physical materials. Others need visual recognition, oral rehearsal, written recording or short, playful retrieval practice.

This pack allows learners to:

  • see two equal quantities represented with Montessori bead colours;
  • connect each visual double with its total;
  • build the quantities using coloured beads, golden beads or Stamp Game pieces;
  • choose an answer and check it independently;
  • record doubles in a small personal booklet; and
  • retrieve facts during a structured partner game.

Particularly Helpful for Neurodivergent Learners

The resource offers several entry points without changing the mathematical goal. A child can begin with concrete materials, use colour as a memory cue, practise one card at a time or rehearse through a short game. The predictable formats and immediate feedback can reduce working-memory demands and make repetition feel purposeful rather than punitive.

What Is Included?

Self-Correcting Clip Cards

A set of multiple-choice cards shows each double with coloured bead-bar imagery. Children place a peg or counter on their chosen total and check the answer on the reverse.

The cards cover the full doubles sequence to 20 and include prepared answer backs. You may also add a simple control dot manually to reduce printing.

Two Differentiated Foldable Booklets

Two one-page mini books divide the facts into manageable groups:

  • Book A: the earlier doubles facts;
  • Book B: the later doubles facts.

Each booklet is supplied in both colour and black-and-white. Children view the bead representation, record the equation and write the total. Illustrated assembly instructions show how to cut and fold each page into a compact booklet.

Ladybug Doubles Game

This partner or small-group game combines bead imagery, totals and missing values. Players take turns drawing a card and identifying the missing part of the double.

Special action cards add an element of surprise, making the game useful for short fluency sessions without revealing a fixed worksheet sequence.

Ten Hands-On Modelling Mats

Large ladybug mats provide totals from 2 to 20. Children use physical Montessori equipment to divide each total into two equal quantities on the wings.

Possible materials include:

  • Montessori coloured bead bars;
  • golden beads;
  • Stamp Game pieces;
  • counters; or
  • other small manipulatives.

The mats help learners reason backwards from the sum and discover the two equal addends rather than simply reading a completed equation.

A Concrete-to-Fluent Teaching Sequence

  1. Build the double. Use the modelling mats and physical materials.
  2. Name the quantities. Connect the two equal groups with an addition equation.
  3. Match the visual and total. Introduce the self-correcting clip cards.
  4. Record the facts. Complete the appropriate foldable booklet.
  5. Practise retrieval. Use the ladybug game for brief, repeated review.
  6. Apply the knowledge. Connect secure doubles with near-doubles strategies.
