Assessment Without Losing the Montessori Approach
These are not designed to produce a final grade, rank children or replace careful observation. A child’s total score is far less important than the pattern revealed by their responses.
You might use one complete assessment, select only the relevant sections, read questions aloud, record a child’s spoken answers, or spread the work across several sessions. The format can be adapted to the age, reading ability and needs of the learner.
Assessment is most useful when it sits alongside:
- daily observation;
- conversations with the child;
- work samples and completed projects;
- knowledge of previous presentations;
- the child’s use of Montessori materials; and

For children whose reading or writing skills may hide their subject knowledge, questions can be read aloud and answers can be dictated to the adult. Use professional judgement and adapt the process so the assessment measures the intended knowledge—not simply the child’s ability to read a test independently.
