From Reading CCVC Words to Understanding Sentences

A child may be able to read a word such as frog or clap in isolation but still find it challenging to recognise that same word when it appears within a complete sentence.

Sentence reading requires much more.

The child needs to:

• Recognise the consonant blend
• Blend the CCVC word accurately
• Read the other words in the sentence
• Hold the meaning in mind
• Compare the sentence with the available pictures
• Select the picture that makes sense

This brings together phonics, fluency and comprehension in one manageable activity.

Why CCVC Words Can Be Tricky

CCVC words contain two consonants before the vowel, as in words such as:

• frog
• stop
• clap
• grin

For developing readers, the challenge is often holding both beginning consonant sounds while blending smoothly into the vowel and final consonant.

Children may:

• Drop one of the beginning sounds
• Guess from the first letter
• Add an extra vowel sound between consonants
• Read the word correctly but lose track of the meaning of the sentence

This resource gives children repeated practice applying their CCVC decoding skills within meaningful text.

Why Match Sentences to Pictures?

Picture matching gives children an immediate reason to read for meaning.

They cannot complete the activity successfully by simply pronouncing the words.

They need to ask:

• What did the sentence actually say?
• Which picture shows that meaning?
• Does my choice make sense?
