From Reading Digraph Words to Understanding Sentences

A child may be able to decode a word such as ship, chat, thin or ring in isolation but still need support recognising those same patterns when they appear in connected text.

That is a much more demanding task.

While reading a sentence, the child needs to:

• Recognise the target digraph
• Blend the sounds accurately
• Read the other words in the sentence
• Hold the meaning in mind
• Compare the sentence with several possible pictures
• Select the image that makes sense

Digraphs can be an important step in early phonics because two letters work together to represent one sound or sound pattern.
