Find Out What Children Understand—and What to Teach Next

Children may confidently complete geography shelf work without yet having connected all the underlying concepts. They might recognise a continent puzzle, for example, but still be unsure about oceans, hemispheres, map scales, landforms, biomes or the relationship between physical and cultural geography.

This printable Montessori Geography Assessment helps you identify what a child already understands, where gaps remain and which lessons or follow-up work would be most useful next.

It includes separate assessments for physical geography and cultural geography, together with simple coded rubrics that make the results quick to interpret.

What Is Assessed?

Physical Geography Assessment

The seven-page physical geography assessment explores children’s understanding of:

  • landforms
  • continents and oceans
  • directions, scale and route finding
  • the Northern and Southern Hemispheres
  • the Equator, Tropics and Polar Circles
  • the Prime Meridian
  • deserts, rivers and islands
  • the layers of the Earth
  • earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
  • biomes

A two-page physical geography rubric is included.

Cultural Geography Assessment

The four-page cultural geography assessment explores children’s knowledge of:

  • countries within each continent
  • their own country
  • capital cities
  • flags of the world
  • celebrations and cultural knowledge

A one-page cultural geography rubric is included.

Easy-to-Use Marking Rubrics

The rubrics are coded to correspond directly with the assessment questions. This means you can move quickly between the child’s completed work and the rubric, record what they know and identify possible next teaching steps without calculating a percentage or assigning a grade.

The purpose is not to rank children. It is to give you a clearer picture of their current understanding so that future Montessori presentations and follow-up work can be more purposeful.

Flexible for Diverse Learners

The assessments can be completed independently by fluent readers, but they do not have to be administered in a rigid test format.

You may:

  • read questions aloud
  • write down a child’s verbal answers
  • divide the assessment across several sessions
  • use selected sections rather than the entire assessment
  • repeat sections later to document progress

In my classroom, completion time has ranged from approximately 20 minutes to one hour per assessment, depending on the child and the support provided.

Useful for Planning and Transitions

Use this resource to:

  • identify geography concepts that need revisiting
  • plan individual, small-group or whole-class lessons
  • record progress across the elementary cycle
  • support a child moving from a 6–9 to a 9–12 environment
  • gain a starting-point snapshot for a new learner
  • help children become more familiar with written assessment formats

This is a teacher-led assessment resource. It is not a standardised test, diagnostic instrument or replacement for ongoing observation and professional judgement.

Need Assessments Across the Curriculum?

This geography assessment is also included in the Montessori Elementary Assessment Bundle for Ages 6–12.

The bundle brings together assessments covering maths, language, history, geography, botany, zoology, astronomy, Earth science, the human body and personal skills—helping you identify strengths, gaps and next lessons across the elementary curriculum.
