Many beginning readers become confident with simple CVC words such as:

• dog
• sun

The next challenge often comes when a second consonant is added before the vowel:

These words require the child to hold onto both beginning consonant sounds and blend them accurately into the rest of the word.

This can be especially challenging for children who:
