Can your child read simple CVC words—but become unsure when two consonants appear together at the beginning of a word?

Words such as frog, clap, stop and grin can be a big next step for beginning readers because children need to hold onto both initial consonant sounds while blending smoothly through the whole word.

These hands-on CCVC Word to Picture Matching Cards give children focused practice decoding CCVC words and connecting each written word with meaning.

Children read the word, find the matching picture and then check their own work using the self-correcting control on the reverse.

Designed for Montessori classrooms, Science of Reading-aligned phonics instruction, structured literacy, intervention and homeschool learning, this resource helps children move beyond simple CVC words and build confidence with initial consonant blends.

📚 What's Included?

This printable CCVC phonics resource includes:

  • 36 CCVC words
  • Matching picture cards
  • Traditional Montessori colour coding
  • Self-correcting control on the reverse of each picture
  • Printable word-to-picture matching format

Children read each written word and match it to the correct picture.

Once the activity is complete, they can turn the picture over to check the correct word independently.

From CVC Words to CCVC Words

Many beginning readers become confident with simple CVC words such as:

  • cat
  • dog
  • sun

The next challenge often comes when a second consonant is added before the vowel:

  • frog
  • clap
  • stop
  • grin

These words require the child to hold onto both beginning consonant sounds and blend them accurately into the rest of the word.

This can be especially challenging for children who:

  • Drop one of the beginning sounds
  • Guess from the first letter
  • Add an extra vowel between consonants
  • Can hear the word but struggle to decode it from print

Why Match Words to Pictures?

Reading a word is only useful if the child connects that written word with meaning.

The picture-matching format asks the child to:

  • Look carefully at the printed word
  • Blend each sound
  • Read the complete CCVC word
  • Understand what the word means
  • Find the picture that represents it

This makes the activity more meaningful than simply reading isolated word lists.

Build Stronger Initial Blend Skills

CCVC words often begin with consonant combinations such as:

  • bl
  • cl
  • fl
  • fr
  • gr
  • pl
  • sl
  • st

Children need to hear and retain each sound without merging, dropping or adding sounds.

Repeated practice helps children become more automatic at reading these patterns and prepares them for increasingly complex words and sentences.

What Skills Does This Resource Support?

Children will practise:

  • Reading CCVC words
  • Blending initial consonant clusters
  • Phoneme-grapheme correspondence
  • Word recognition
  • Vocabulary development
  • Encoding and spelling awareness
  • Connecting print with meaning
  • Visual discrimination
  • Independent self-correction

Self-Correcting Montessori Literacy Work

The correct word is written on the reverse of each picture, allowing children to check their own work.

This means the child can:

  1. Read the word.
  2. Choose the matching picture.
  3. Complete the full activity.
  4. Turn the cards over and check independently.

This self-correcting structure fits naturally with Montessori practice and supports greater independence.

Why Repeated CCVC Practice Matters

Some children quickly move from CVC words into consonant blends.

Others need much more explicit practice.

A child may read frog as fog, or stop as top, because they have not yet learned to hold onto every sound in the initial cluster.

This activity gives children repeated opportunities to slow down, notice each phoneme and blend the full word accurately.

🌿 Perfect For

  • Montessori language shelves
  • Science of Reading-aligned phonics practice
  • Structured literacy instruction
  • CCVC and consonant blend lessons
  • Literacy centres
  • Independent shelf work
  • Small-group teaching
  • Reading intervention
  • Early finisher activities
  • Homeschool phonics lessons

Help Children Move Beyond Simple CVC Words

Adding just one extra consonant can make decoding much more difficult for an early reader.

These cards give children a clear and manageable progression:

notice every sound → blend the CCVC word → connect the word with meaning → check independently.

The result is purposeful, hands-on phonics practice that builds stronger decoding, word recognition and reading confidence.
