What Is the FLOSS Rule?

In many one-syllable words with a short vowel, the final consonants f, l and s are doubled.

The letter z is also commonly included in this spelling generalisation.

The child may be able to hear the final sound perfectly clearly but still need explicit teaching to understand why the written word contains a doubled consonant.

Why Can FLOSS Words Be Tricky?
