An adult or older child reads each word aloud, and the learner decides where to place it:

• Does the final consonant need to be doubled?
• Or is a single consonant enough?

What Is the FLOSS Spelling Rule?

In many one-syllable words with a short vowel, the final consonants f, l and s are doubled.

The letter z is also sometimes included in this spelling generalisation.

Examples include words such as:

• off
• bell
• miss
• buzz

However, children also need to understand that doubling is not required simply because a word ends in one of these letters.

They need to pay attention to the whole word and notice whether the spelling pattern applies.

Why Can Final Consonant Doubling Be Confusing?

For developing spellers, hearing the final sound is often not the difficult part.

A child may clearly hear /f/, /l/, /s/ or /z/ but still be unsure whether the sound should be represented by one letter or two.

They might reasonably write:

• mis instead of miss
• bel instead of bell
• of instead of off

Explicitly teaching the spelling generalisation helps children understand that English spelling contains patterns that can guide their choices.
