Structure Without Turning Montessori Into a Checklist

How to Use the Montessori Cosmic Education Scope and Sequence

1. Begin with a Great Story

Present the story as an impressionistic introduction. Give children time to wonder, discuss and ask questions.

2. Follow the children's interests

Notice which topics capture their imagination. A question about stars might lead to astronomy, while an interest in fossils may lead to life timelines or classification.

3. Choose meaningful follow-up work

Use the scope and sequence to identify a small number of relevant lessons and activities. There is no need to present everything at once.

4. Prepare your environment gradually

Add vocabulary cards, experiments, timelines, sorting activities and research opportunities as children's interests and understanding develop.

5. Revisit and deepen understanding

The Great Stories can be revisited throughout the elementary years. Children may initially explore broad concepts before moving into deeper research, analysis and independent projects.
