Help children see where decimals belong on a number line.
These Montessori-inspired decimal clip and flip cards give students hands-on practice comparing and ordering decimals.
A low-prep, self-checking decimal activity for upper elementary, homeschool maths and independent work.

Decimals can feel abstract for children, especially when they are expected to compare numbers like 0.4, 0.04 and 0.004 without a clear visual model. This printable Montessori decimal number line activity helps students understand decimal size, place value and order through hands-on, self-checking practice.

Children use numbered pegs or clips to place decimals in the correct order directly on the cards, then flip the cards over to check their answers independently. This makes the activity ideal for Montessori shelves, maths centres, homeschool lessons, intervention work or revision after a decimal lesson.

This resource includes 26 decimal ordering question cards, with two complete sets covering decimals to two decimal places and three decimal places. It also includes answer cards and teacher instructions.

Why this resource helps

Many children can read a decimal but still struggle to understand its value. They may assume that more digits means a bigger number, or they may find it hard to place decimals correctly on a number line. This activity gives students repeated, visual and tactile practice so they can build a stronger understanding of decimal order.

The self-checking format reduces reliance on adult correction and supports independent learning. Simply print, laminate, add numbered pegs, and place the cards on your shelf or in a maths centre.

Created by a Montessori-trained teacher, this resource is designed to help children move from decimal place value lessons into confident comparison and ordering work.
