Your learner can read a vowel combination during a phonics lesson—but can they recognise it independently when it appears among distracting words?

Advanced vowel patterns can be confusing because the same sound may be represented in different ways, while the same letters can sometimes represent more than one sound. Children need repeated opportunities to read, compare and sort words without every activity becoming another worksheet.

These Montessori Vowel Team and Diphthong Word Mazes turn decoding practice into a focused path-finding challenge. Children move through each maze by reading words containing the target pattern while avoiding carefully placed distractors.

Practise the Pattern Without Guessing

Each maze includes words that contain the focus spelling pattern alongside words that do not belong. To reach the exit, children must read each word and decide whether it matches the target sound or vowel combination.

This requires more than visually spotting two letters. Learners must:

• decode the complete word;
• identify the relevant vowel sound;
• distinguish target words from distractors;
• follow the route without losing their place; and
• check their decisions against the completed maze.

Patterns Included

• au — as in autumn and pause
• aw — as in yawn and claw
• ew — as in crew and flew
• oo — as in hoop
• oi — as in oil and join
• oy — as in toy and enjoy
• ou — as in cloud and house
• ow — as in cow
• ow — as in snow
• oo — as in book
• igh — as in light
• ea — as in bread
• ear — as in near
• air — as in chair
• ere — as in here

Separating the two pronunciations of ow and oo helps children understand that matching letters do not always represent the same sound.

How to Present the Activity

1. Review the target sound. Read several example words together.
2. Model one decision. Show how to read the complete word rather than simply search for matching letters.
3. Trace the route. The child follows only words that belong to the target pattern.
4. Check independently. Compare the completed maze with the answer page.
5. Revisit unfamiliar words. Read, define or use them in oral sentences.

Print the mazes back-to-back with their answers, place the answer sheets in a separate control folder or laminate the pages for repeated dry-erase use.

Extend the Learning

• Record the words found along the correct route.
• Sort the words by spelling pattern or pronunciation.
• Underline the vowel combination in each word.
• Choose several words for sentence writing.
• Dictate selected words after the maze is complete.
• Identify syllables or morphemes in longer examples.
• Compare two spellings that represent a similar sound.

Recommended Prior Knowledge

This resource is designed for children who can already blend CVC and more complex words and have received explicit teaching of the target vowel combinations.

The mazes provide consolidation and discrimination practice. They are not intended to introduce all 15 patterns for the first time without teacher instruction.
