Montessori Area: Comparing size sort and count activity (math)

Teaching area? Does your national or state  curriculum require children to learn area at a different time to the traditional Montessori scope and sequence. 

This activity helps  young learners learn how to count with area square blocks.

This area activity is designed for elementary Montessorians.

 Students sort pictures under larger or smaller area header cards.

Two of each picture are provided, a small version and a large version.

As an extension students can use the squares to compare how much bigger one picture is to another.

Students may also be interested in learning how much of a square is covered.

Students will :

-Understand that area can be measured in squares that cover the area.

-Find the difference between two numbers
