Why Are Vowel Teams So Tricky?

Many children become confident reading simple CVC words and then discover that long vowel sounds can be represented in several different ways.

For example, the long /a/ sound may appear in:

• rain
• play

The sound is similar, but the spelling pattern is different.

The same challenge appears with other vowel teams:

• ee / ea
• oa / oe
• ie

Children need repeated opportunities to compare these patterns so they can begin noticing where and how each spelling is used.
