the child might blend:

Children read each CVC word, blend the sounds continuously and match the written word to the correct picture.

What Is Continuous Blending?

Continuous blending is a way of helping beginning readers join sounds together without inserting long pauses between phonemes.

Instead of reading:

s / a / d

a child might stretch and connect the sounds:

ssssaaaaa → sssaaaadddd

This can make blending easier because the sounds remain connected.

The child does not have to remember three completely separate sounds and then somehow reconstruct them into a word.

They hear the word beginning to emerge as they blend.

Why These CVC Words Were Chosen

Not every sound is equally easy to stretch.

Some consonant sounds can be held continuously without stopping the airflow. These are sometimes called continuant sounds.

The words in this set begin with sounds such as:

• f
• v
• s
• z
• m
• n
• l
• r
• h

Because these initial sounds can be stretched, they are often easier to use when teaching continuous blending.

Some words may end with stop sounds, but the carefully selected initial sounds help children enter the word smoothly.

Why Do Some Children Struggle to Blend?

A child may know every individual letter sound and still be unable to read a simple CVC word.

For example, they may correctly say:

/m/ /a/ /p/

but still not recognise the word map.

This can happen because the child is treating each sound as a separate unit rather than joining them together.

Continuous blending helps reduce that separation.

Instead of:

m ... a ... p

the child can move towards:

mmmmaaaap

This can make it easier to hear the complete word.

From Letter Sounds to Real Reading

Knowing letter sounds is important—but it is not the final goal.

Children need to learn how to combine those sounds into recognisable words.

This activity supports a clear progression:

see the letters → stretch the sounds → blend continuously → recognise the word → connect it with the picture.

Some children do not need more practice memorising letter sounds.
