Does your child know that c can say /k/ and g can say /g/—but become confused when those letters suddenly make a different sound?

Soft c and soft g can feel unpredictable to developing readers.

A child may read cat and gum confidently, then hesitate over words such as city or giant.

These hands-on Soft C and Soft G Clip Cards help children notice the pattern and apply it in meaningful sentence context.

Children read each sentence, consider the two possible word choices, decide which one makes sense and clip the correct answer. They can then flip the card over to check their work independently.

Designed for Montessori classrooms, Science of Reading-aligned phonics instruction, structured literacy, intervention and homeschool learning, these cards help children move beyond memorising a rule and towards applying soft c and soft g patterns while reading.

They can then flip the card over to check their response independently.

Why Are Soft C and Soft G Tricky?

Many children first learn that:

  • c says /k/ as in cat
  • g says /g/ as in gum

Then they meet words such as:

  • city
  • cent
  • giant
  • gym

Suddenly the familiar consonants are producing different sounds.

Explicitly teaching the soft c and soft g pattern helps children understand that these changes are not random. In many words, c and g change sound when followed by e, i or y.

From Knowing the Rule to Applying It While Reading

A child may be able to repeat the rule but still struggle to use it automatically in connected text.

That is where these cards are useful.

To complete each activity, the child needs to:

  • Read the sentence
  • Decode the possible word choices
  • Notice whether c or g is followed by e, i or y
  • Apply the soft sound pattern
  • Use sentence meaning to choose the correct word
  • Check the answer independently

This brings together phonics, decoding and comprehension in one focused activity.

Why Use Cloze Sentences?

Reading a word in isolation is useful—but children also need practice applying phonics knowledge in context.

The cloze format asks the child to consider:

  • What does this word say?
  • Is the c or g soft?
  • Does this word make sense in the sentence?

This helps children connect spelling patterns with real reading rather than treating phonics as a separate drill.

What Skills Does This Resource Support?

Children will practise:

  • Reading soft c words
  • Reading soft g words
  • Recognising spelling patterns before e, i and y
  • Decoding in connected text
  • Using context clues
  • Reading comprehension
  • Orthographic pattern recognition
  • Spelling awareness
  • Independent self-correction

Hands-On Phonics That Supports Independence

The clip-and-flip format makes the activity tactile, purposeful and self-correcting.

Children use a peg or clothespin to mark their answer, then flip the card over to see whether they were correct.

This makes the cards particularly suited to:

  • Independent Montessori shelf work
  • Literacy centres
  • Small-group teaching
  • Targeted intervention

Children receive immediate feedback without needing an adult to check every answer.

🌿 Perfect For

  • Montessori language shelves
  • Science of Reading-aligned phonics practice
  • Structured literacy instruction
  • Soft c and soft g lessons
  • Spelling pattern revision
  • Literacy centres
  • Small-group instruction
  • Reading intervention
  • Independent morning work
  • Homeschool phonics lessons

Help Children See the Pattern Instead of Guessing

Soft c and soft g can feel confusing when children are simply expected to remember individual words.

These cards give them a clearer path:

notice the following letter → apply the sound pattern → read the word → check whether it makes sense in the sentence.

That makes the activity useful not only for phonics practice, but also for building confidence, independence and a deeper understanding of English spelling patterns.
