Help children recognise geometry in the world around them with this hands-on Montessori-inspired shape sorting activity.
This printable resource includes shape heading cards and real-world picture cards for children to sort. Instead of only identifying flat shapes on a worksheet, children match everyday objects to their correct 2D shape category, helping them see geometry in food, buildings, signs, patterns, games, and classroom objects.

How to use:
Place the shape heading cards in a row. Add one example under each heading, then invite children to sort the remaining picture cards into the correct columns. For independent work, you can write the answers on the back so children can self-check.
Why this works:
Children need to see that geometry is part of everyday life. This activity helps them move beyond memorising shape names and begin recognising circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals, hexagons, pentagons, octagons, rhombuses, and trapeziums in real objects.
Created by a Montessori-trained teacher:
I’m a Montessori and state-trained teacher from New Zealand. I create printable resources that are practical, thoughtful, and easy to use in real classrooms and homeschools.
Please note:
This activity works best once children have already been introduced to common 2D shapes.
