Children may be able to name “one-half” or “one-quarter”—but do they understand that the denominator tells us how many equal parts make the whole?

Fractions can become confusing when children are introduced to symbols before they have a clear visual understanding of equal parts. They may confuse the numerator and denominator, assume larger denominators mean larger pieces or recognise familiar fractions without understanding why they are named that way.

These Montessori Fraction Posters provide a clear visual reference for unit fractions from 1/2 to 1/10. Each poster connects the fraction name, written symbol and divided whole, helping children build accurate fraction vocabulary before moving into equivalence, comparison and operations.

Give Children a Visual Anchor for Fraction Language

Each poster shows a circle divided into equal parts, with one part highlighted and the matching unit fraction written beneath it.

Children can connect:

• one-half with one of two equal parts;
• one-third with one of three equal parts;
• one-quarter or one-fourth with one of four equal parts;
• the spoken fraction name with its written symbol;
• the denominator with the number of equal parts; and
• the numerator with the number of selected parts.

Three Versions to Suit Different Learners

Set A: Montessori Fraction Colours

This set uses the familiar Montessori colour sequence for fractions. It is ideal for classrooms where children already work with Montessori fraction circles and benefit from matching printed visuals with concrete materials.

Set B: Consistent Red Fraction Models

Every selected fraction part is shown in red. This version reduces colour variation so children can focus on the changing denominator and the relative size of each fractional part.

Set C: Equal-Parts Vocabulary Posters

This expanded set explicitly explains the denominator language. For example, the posters show that:

• thirds means three equal parts;
