Make your Ready to Read Phonics Plus Tupu 2 lessons easier to extend with this set of structured writing, handwriting and comprehension activities.
These printable worksheets have been created to accompany the current Tupu 2 readers used in New Zealand schools. Each activity draws on the vocabulary, phonics patterns, characters and events in the corresponding book, helping children move from reading a decodable text to writing about it.
Rather than completing unrelated handwriting sentences, students practise writing words and sentences that are connected to the book they have just read.
I have 'test driven' these in my own classroom which is predominantly neurodivergent and ELL learners very successfully.

The activities are scaffolded so that beginning writers can first work with supplied words and sentence frames before moving towards more independent written responses.
Why teachers will find this useful
These pages help students connect:
reading → phonics → handwriting → sentence writing → comprehension
They can be used for:
- guided-reading follow-up;
- BSLA or structured-literacy rotations;
- independent literacy work;
- handwriting practice;
- teacher-aide activities;
- intervention groups;
- homework or home learning;
- revision after completing a Tupu 2 reader.
The large drawing spaces, clear layouts and supported sentence structures make the activities approachable for early writers while still providing opportunities for more confident students to expand their ideas.
