How Do Fossils Form?

Fossils are preserved remains, impressions or traces of organisms that lived in the past.

In one common fossilization process, an organism dies and is buried by sediment. Over long periods, additional layers accumulate, sediments become rock and minerals may preserve or replace parts of the organism.

Later, geological processes and erosion may expose the fossil, allowing scientists to study it.

Not every organism becomes a fossil. Preservation depends on conditions, including the environment, burial and what happens to the remains over time.
