Your child can count past 10—but do they understand why 14 means one ten and four more?

Teen numbers are often difficult because their spoken names do not clearly reveal their place-value structure. Children may confuse 12 and 20, reverse digits or memorise the counting sequence without understanding how each number is composed.

This Montessori Teen Numbers Bundle gives children repeated, hands-on practice connecting numerals, number names, coloured bead bars, ten quantities and addition equations.

With two complementary resources and a wide variety of formats, learners can build, match, order, sort, clip, assemble and record the numbers from 10 to 20.

Make the Structure of Teen Numbers Visible

A child may recognise the numeral 16 without understanding that it contains:

• one complete group of ten;
• six additional units;
• the equation 10 + 6;
• the spoken number name sixteen; and
• a specific place in the sequence from 10 to 20.

This bundle repeatedly connects those representations so children can see that teen numbers are not arbitrary symbols. Each one is built from ten and an additional quantity.

What Is Included?

Montessori Teen Number Clip Cards

The first resource contains self-correcting multiple-choice cards for numbers 11–20.

Children:

• look at the Montessori bead representation;
• select the matching numeral or number name;
• mark their answer with a peg or counter; and
• turn the card over to check independently.

Prepared answer backs are included, although teachers can also add a simple control dot to reduce printing.

Large Numeral Cards From 10 to 20

Individual full-page numerals can be placed on the floor for movement-based number work.

Use them to ask children to:

• find a named number;
• identify the number before or after;
• locate a numeral containing a particular digit;
• order the cards from smallest to largest; or
• reverse the sequence from largest to smallest.

Bead, Numeral and Number-Name Matching

Children match written numerals with:

• Montessori bead representations;
• written number names;
• tens-and-ones quantities; and
• equations showing ten plus an additional amount.

Actual Montessori bead bars can be placed beside the printed cards to strengthen the concrete connection.

Teen Number Building Worksheets

Four activity sheets provide mixed and ordered practice with selected teen numbers.

Children:

• trace or review the numeral;
• construct it with coloured bead bars;
• represent it on ten frames; and
• connect the written number with the quantity.

Printable bead pieces are included for learners who do not have access to physical Montessori materials.

Hands-On Sorting Themes

Children match groups of themed picture cards to the correct teen-number quantity. Several visual themes are included so the activity can be rotated without changing the mathematical objective.

This provides repeated counting and matching practice while keeping the shelf work fresh.

Numeral, Bead and Equation Cards

Children match three representations of each number:

• the written numeral;
• the Montessori bead quantity; and
• the related equation, such as 10 + 4.

This supports the understanding that 14 is not simply a number after 13—it is one ten and four more.

Equation and Missing-Addend Practice

Eight reusable recording cards include:

• ordered 10-plus equations;
• mixed equation sequences;

Children move from solving 10 + 5 = ___ to identifying the missing part in 10 + ___ = 15.

Teen Number Picture Puzzles

Four cut-and-assemble puzzles provide an additional way to practise sequencing and recognising the teen numbers.

Children use number order to rebuild each picture, combining maths with visual discrimination and fine-motor work.

1. Build the quantity. Use one ten bar and the relevant coloured bead bar.
2. Match the numeral. Connect the quantity with the written symbol.
3. Add the number name. Match the spoken and written language.
4. Explore place value. Identify one ten and the additional units.
5. Connect the equation. Represent each number as ten plus another amount.
