Help children move beyond memorising “igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic” with a hands-on Montessori geology unit that makes the rock cycle feel concrete, visual and meaningful.

This Rocks and Rock Cycle Unit is designed for Montessori elementary, homeschool, and lower-to-upper primary science classrooms. It gives children a clear pathway into geology through reading, matching, sorting, investigation, experiments, posters, charts and follow-up work. Instead of handing children a worksheet and hoping the vocabulary sticks, this resource helps them see how rocks change over time, how Earth’s layers connect to volcanoes and movement, and how sediment, heat, pressure, weathering and erosion all work together.

This is especially useful in a Montessori 6–12 classroom because it supports the child’s natural curiosity about the Earth. It can sit beautifully within Cosmic Education, the First Great Story, geography, physical science, Earth science, and independent follow-up work. Children can return to the charts and matching materials again and again, making it ideal for shelf work, small group lessons, research prompts, and hands-on science exploration.

The resource includes work on the layers of the Earth, including the crust, mantle and core, as well as the hydrosphere and atmosphere. It also includes a full rock cycle sequence with control charts, a blank chart, matching cards, readings, comprehension tasks, posters, and practical activities for sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. Children also explore rock qualities and the difference between rocks and minerals.

What’s included:

  • Rock cycle matching activity
  • Paths through the rock cycle control chart
  • Blank rock cycle chart
  • Sedimentary rocks reading
  • Sedimentary rocks comprehension task
  • Sedimentary rocks poster
  • Sedimentation experiment
  • Make your own sedimentary rock activity
