Do your students understand place value during a lesson but become confused when tens, hundreds and decimal amounts appear in a real context?

These New Zealand money task cards connect place value with familiar currency. Students calculate the value of groups of $10 notes before combining them with $5 notes and coins.

Beginning with accessible two-digit amounts and progressing to totals approaching $1,000, the cards help children see how repeated groups of ten build larger numbers.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

• 20 printable money task cards

• Answers printed on the reverse

• Teacher instructions

• Whole-dollar and decimal amounts

• Totals ranging from $43 to $969

• New Zealand denominations from 10c to $10

• Two-digit and three-digit calculations

SKILLS PRACTISED

• Understanding tens and hundreds

• Applying place-value knowledge

• Multiplying groups of $10

• Using repeated addition

• Combining notes and coins

• Adding whole-dollar amounts

• Working with dollars and cents

• Reading decimal money notation

• Calculating mentally

• Checking work independently

Each card presents a short scenario such as:

“Jane has 44 ten-dollar notes and seven one-dollar coins. How much money does she have?”

Students must recognise that 44 groups of $10 equal $440 before adding the remaining coins.

HOW TO USE

Print the cards double-sided so each question has its answer on the reverse. Cut out and laminate the cards for repeated use.

Students solve each problem and then turn the card over to check their answer. Real or play money, place-value materials or written working can be provided when additional support is needed.
