Do your students recognise New Zealand coins but struggle to work out how much more they need to make a total?
These hands-on New Zealand money clip cards help children move beyond simply naming and counting coins. On each card, students count the coins shown, compare the amount with the target total, and select the additional coin needed to complete it.
Instead of guessing, children practise the important mathematical thinking involved in finding a missing amount.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
• 28 printable clip cards
• Target amounts from $1.10 to $4.70
• Realistic illustrations of New Zealand coins
• Two possible coin choices on every card
• Self-checking answers for independent work
• Teacher instructions
• Black-and-white, ink-friendly format
SKILLS PRACTISED
• Recognising New Zealand coins
• Counting collections of mixed coins
• Adding money amounts
• Finding the difference between two amounts
• Solving missing-addend problems
• Checking work independently
HOW TO USE
Print the cards double-sided so the question appears on the front and the answer on the back. Cut out and laminate the cards, then provide clothes pegs or clips.
Students count the coins already shown, calculate how much more is needed to reach the target, and clip the correct coin. They can then turn over the card to check their answer.
These cards are ideal for:
• Montessori shelf work
• Maths centres
• Small-group lessons
• Independent practice
• Money unit revision
• Homeschool learning
• Early finishers
The cards are designed for use after students have received an introductory lesson on counting New Zealand coins and finding missing amounts.
Created by a Montessori and state-trained New Zealand teacher, this resource provides purposeful, hands-on practice while encouraging accuracy, independence and mathematical reasoning.
Child fills in the gap with this clip and flip activity to finish making the stated amount.
Some coins are given as a start and child works out what other coins are needed to make the total amount.
Child puts a peg on the correct coin/s and then flips card over to see if they are correct
28 cards. One question on each card.
These make a great maths centre and can be used over and over.
