Recognising New Zealand coins is only the beginning. Can children compare their values when the physically larger coin is not worth more?
Money can be confusing for young learners because size does not reliably show value. A child may recognise a 10-cent coin, $1 coin or $5 note but still struggle to decide which amount is greater—especially when several coins or notes are combined.
These New Zealand Money Comparison Clip Cards provide hands-on practice comparing NZ coins, banknotes and mixed amounts. Children select the greater value with a peg or counter, then turn the card over to check their work.

Children compare amounts including:
- 10c and 20c;
- 50c and $1;
- $1 and $2;
- $5 and two $2 coins;
- $5 and $10;
- $20 and two $5 notes;
- two $10 notes and $1; and
- $5 compared with $2 plus $1.
The questions gradually move from comparing two individual coins to reasoning with combined values and groups of notes.

Easy Montessori Shelf Work
