Your child may recognise a 20-cent or 50-cent coin—but can they calculate a group of coins and match it to the correct written amount?

Learning coin names is only the first step. Young learners also need repeated practice combining coin values and recognising that the same amount can be represented visually and numerically.

These New Zealand Money Matching Activities give Years 1–3 learners focused practice matching groups of NZ coins with written amounts up to $1.

The simple format makes the activity easy to understand, quick to prepare and suitable for worksheets, maths centres or reusable Montessori-inspired shelf work.

Move Beyond Naming Individual Coins

A child may correctly identify a 10-cent coin but still struggle when several coins appear together.

These activities help learners practise:

  • recognising New Zealand coins;
  • counting groups of coins;
  • combining coin values;
  • reading amounts written in cents and dollars;
  • matching visual quantities with numerical amounts;
  • checking that a total makes sense; and
  • building early financial-literacy confidence.

Helpful for Learners Who Become Overwhelmed by Money Worksheets

Each match is short and clearly defined. Children can work with one amount at a time, use real or play coins for support and repeat the activity without managing a page of lengthy word problems. This can be particularly helpful for neurodivergent learners who benefit from visual information, predictable routines and reduced language demands.

What Is Included?

  • Three printable NZ money pages
  • Thirty matching questions altogether
  • Photographic representations of New Zealand coins
  • Written amounts for children to match
  • Coin totals up to $1
  • A straightforward format suitable for independent practice

Two Easy Ways to Use the Resource

Use as Printable Worksheets

Print one page for each learner. Children draw lines or otherwise connect each group of coins with its matching amount.

Create a Reusable Maths Activity

Laminate the pages, cut apart the sections and invite children to pair the coin cards with the written amounts.

Store the prepared cards in a small envelope, basket or maths-shelf container so children can repeat the work independently.

Add Concrete Coins for Extra Support

Children can recreate each pictured amount with real or play New Zealand coins before selecting the written total.

A useful teaching sequence is:

  1. Name the coins shown.
  2. Build the same amount with physical coins.
  3. Count the total aloud.
  4. Find the matching written amount.
  5. Explain how the total was calculated.

As confidence develops, gradually remove the physical coins and encourage mental counting.
