Montessori Number Trees 1–10 | Number Sense Matching Activity

Your child can say the numbers to 10—but can they recognise each quantity when it is shown in several different ways?

Early number learning can become too focused on recognising written numerals. A child may identify the number 6 but struggle to connect it with six fingers, a Montessori bead bar, a ten frame or a group of six objects.

This Montessori Number Trees Activity helps children build flexible number sense by sorting four visual representations onto each numbered tree from 1–10.

Help Children See the Quantity Behind the Numeral

Each tree represents one number from 1–10. Children find and place four corresponding cards onto it:

• a Montessori coloured bead bar;
• a ten-frame quantity;
• a finger representation; and
• a group of familiar objects.

When the tree is complete, the child can see four different ways of representing the same amount.

Easy to Differentiate

For beginning learners: Offer one or two trees and only the matching cards.

For developing learners: Present three to five trees with the cards mixed together.

For confident learners: Offer all ten trees, ask children to order them and invite them to explain how they recognised each quantity.
