Your child can say the numbers to 10—but can they recognise each quantity when it is shown in several different ways?

Early number learning can become too focused on recognising written numerals. A child may identify the number 6 but struggle to connect it with six fingers, a Montessori bead bar, a ten frame or a group of six objects.

This Montessori Number Trees Activity helps children build flexible number sense by sorting four visual representations onto each numbered tree from 1–10.

  • Includes: 10 number trees and 40 matching cards
  • Representations: Montessori beads, ten frames, fingers and picture quantities
  • Best for: Montessori 3–6, early primary and homeschool
  • Use for: Maths shelves, centres, intervention and independent matching

Help Children See the Quantity Behind the Numeral

Each tree represents one number from 1–10. Children find and place four corresponding cards onto it:

  • a Montessori coloured bead bar;
  • a ten-frame quantity;
  • a finger representation; and
  • a group of familiar objects.

When the tree is complete, the child can see four different ways of representing the same amount.

Build Flexible Number Sense—not Just Numeral Recognition

Children learn that five remains five whether it is represented by a bead bar, fingers, dots on a frame or a group of objects. This flexibility supports later counting, addition, place value and mental maths.

What Is Included?

  • 10 full-page number trees
  • One tree for every number from 1–10
  • 40 rectangular matching cards
  • Montessori bead-bar images
  • Ten-frame representations
  • Diverse finger-number images
  • Picture quantities using animals, fruit and natural objects
  • Teacher directions and differentiation suggestions

Particularly Helpful for Neurodivergent Learners

The activity has one clear purpose: place each card on the correct tree. Children can handle one visual at a time rather than manage a crowded worksheet.

The repeated layout, concrete images and predictable matching routine may be especially useful for learners who benefit from:

  • stable visual structure;
  • reduced language demands;
  • small, manageable choices;
  • hands-on sorting;
  • repetition without handwriting; and
  • several visual pathways into the same concept.

Easy to Differentiate

For beginning learners: Offer one or two trees and only the matching cards.

For developing learners: Present three to five trees with the cards mixed together.

For confident learners: Offer all ten trees, ask children to order them and invite them to explain how they recognised each quantity.
