Modern Montessori Reading: Suffix sorting activities (Subscription)
Make suffix practice active, hands-on, and meaningful with this Montessori-inspired resource! Children will build a strong understanding of suffixes through two engaging activities—sorting words onto mats and a movement game that gets them up and moving.
✨ What’s Included:
-
Sorting mats with headings and meanings
-
Word cards for hands-on sorting
-
Answer cards for self-checking
-
Instructions for a movement-based suffix game
📚 Suffixes Covered:
s, es, y, ish, en, less, er, ly, ment, ness, ful, ing, ed (including the 3 sounds of –ed)
📝 How to Use:
-
Present a blank chart and read the suffix headings with their meanings.
-
Shuffle and present the word cards. The child reads (or listens as the adult reads) and places each word under the correct suffix header.
-
Invite the child to write 3–5 words using the moveable alphabet, with one color for the base word and another for the suffix.
-
Use the answer card for reference and self-correction.
-
Extend the learning with the movement game: call out a word and have the child run to the corner of the room labeled with the matching suffix - posters included for you to label different areas of your room for children to run to.
