Make the periodic table feel less overwhelming and more inviting with this Montessori-inspired introduction to chemistry.

The periodic table is fascinating, but for children it can also look like a wall of symbols and numbers. What does H mean? Why are the elements in rows? What is an atomic number? Why does each box have so much information?

This printable resource gives children a gentle, visual first experience with the periodic table so they can begin to understand what it is, how it is organised, and why it matters.

It is especially useful for Montessori upper elementary classrooms, homeschool science, cosmic education follow-up work, and teachers who want a hands-on chemistry activity that is more meaningful than a worksheet.

A concrete introduction to an abstract idea

Children begin with a simple explanation of the periodic table, elements, atoms, atomic number, atomic mass, and why the table is called “periodic.”

From there, they can explore a simplified periodic table of the first 20 elements using matching cards, charts, posters, and puzzles.

This helps students build familiarity slowly and visually, without needing to memorise everything at once.

What’s included

This 80-page printable resource includes:

  • Child-friendly introduction to the periodic table
  • Explanation of elements and atoms
  • Explanation of atomic number and atomic mass
  • Simplified periodic table of the first 20 elements
  • Colour periodic table chart
  • Black-and-white periodic table chart
  • Individual element cards
  • Matching activity
  • Self-checking control chart
  • Display posters
  • Puzzle activities
  • Real-life visual examples on element cards
  • US and UK/NZ spelling options for aluminum/aluminium

How to use it

Print the table and individual cards on cardstock. Children can place the black-and-white element cards onto the black-and-white table, then check their work using the colour version.

The posters can be used for display, the puzzles can be used as follow-up work, and the element cards can also become research prompts for older students.

Why teachers love this kind of work

Chemistry can feel intimidating when it is introduced too abstractly. This resource gives children a visual way to notice patterns, connect symbols with element names, and begin understanding that the periodic table is connected to everyday life.

The images help make the elements more memorable. For example, children can connect oxygen with an oxygen tank, helium with a balloon, carbon with coal and diamond, sodium with salt, and calcium with bones and shells.

This resource is ideal for

  • Montessori science shelves
  • Upper elementary chemistry
  • Cosmic education follow-up
  • Homeschool science
  • Independent work
  • Small group lessons
  • Visual learners
  • Children beginning periodic table work
