Volcanoes of the World: Studying locations and famous volcanoes

Children are naturally very interested in big things around them. Dinosaurs is an obvious example but so are volcanoes. As children progress through elementary, or the ages of 6-12 understanding more about volcanoes and where they are is a great and necessary topic to cover.

When we teach about volcanoes and their locations we also give knowledge for students to think about at a later date:

  • Fundamental Needs
  • Functional Geography
  • Cultural Geography
  • Plate Tectonics
  • Natural Disasters

Learning about actual volcanoes allows students to bring together or have a window into real life knowledge about countries, volcano types and measurement.

For some students teaching about volcanoes may be the entry point to other learning. While teaching about flags naturally attracts some children, for others it is not a naturally enticing area, by introducing these volcano cards which have the flag of different countries on them we can reinforce how knowing a certain flag helps us instantly know where something is.

Likewise lessons on measurement might not be that interesting to students but understanding real life measurements, such as the height of a volcano, and how they are used reinforces how what we learn in class has real application.
